‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya’ Mantra (Meaning and Benefits)

‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya’ Mantra

Mantra: Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya Namah

Om: Om
Namo: Salutations
Bhagavate Rudraya: To Lord Rudra
Namah: Repeated salutations

Meaning: Repeated salutations to Lord Rudra, or,
“My repeated salutations to the Lord who strikes fear into the ego.”

Why Chant ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya‘?

This mantra, dedicated to Lord Shiva, Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya Namah, is highly powerful because it leads the seeker to bow before Lord Shiva in His fierce and formidable form as Rudra. This bowing is not a mere formality; rather, it is a direct confrontation with the ego hidden within the seeker that keeps one away from the Truth.

Rudra is one of the names of Lord Shiva, originally found in the Vedas. It means “the One who terrifies” or “the One who makes one weep.” This fear is not an external fear but the fear the ego experiences when its falsehood is exposed.

If you know what it is within you that becomes fearful, then you will invoke Rudra. Not so that you become frightened, but so that through Rudra’s fear you may attain self-surrender. Only then can that fear truly come to an end, because fearlessness is not something one is born with—it must be attained. And to become fearless, the ego within must break, because it is the root cause of all your fears.

Look carefully—within every human being there should be the courage to let falsehood stand before Truth. Falsehood must confront Truth—only then does this mantra become accomplished.

As long as the ego remains protected within its own illusions, no spiritual practice can penetrate deeply. The invocation of Rudra is essentially an invocation to break that protective shield, so that the seeker may stand before the Truth that frightens the ego the most.

What Are the Extraordinary Benefits of Chanting ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya‘?

When one truly enters spiritual practice, life begins to experience benefits that cannot be found anywhere except through Yoga. If you understand why meditation and yoga are important in life, you will never fail to give spirituality the highest priority.

Freedom from the Bondage of Maya: Maya governs the individual in such a way that one does not hesitate to turn life into suffering, because every human being is born in ignorance. If you do not know yourself, that is, if you are not established in Self-realization, you may remain trapped in the illusions of Maya, for we have already discussed how Maya arises from within yourself.

Freedom from the bondage of Maya becomes possible only when a person turns away from the false ego and begins moving toward the pure Self, Rudra. This journey does not happen in a single day. Through continuous chanting, the inner layers gradually fall away, and one slowly emerges from illusion.

Attainment in Yoga: This becomes possible only when a person moves from separation to union, because in ordinary life most people move toward separation due to worldly attractions. Chanting ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya‘ means training the mind to rise above the inequalities of the world. Otherwise, it continues to swing between pleasure and pain, gain and loss.

Only through equanimity does one attain the state of Samadhi. This mantra-chanting helps cultivate detachment. A seeker who chants this mantra regularly gradually realizes that worldly events come and go, while the true Self remains untouched.

Freedom from Fear: As we explained earlier, only that which has a false existence becomes fearful. Lord Shiva is the embodiment of Truth, and invoking Him within the heart dissolves the ego that is the source of fear.

When the seeker repeatedly remembers Rudra, they gradually recognize that the fear within is merely an attempt to protect the false existence of the ego. As this recognition deepens, the roots of fear become weaker, because that which is founded on falsehood cannot stand before Truth.
