What is the Atman really?

Do You Also Think Atman Is a Ghost or a Witch?

What Is Atman, Really?

Seekers, you may already know that your physical body is like a temporary garment, just as Lord Krishna explains in the Bhagavad Gita. Just as we change our old clothes and wear new ones, Atman leaves one body and takes on another.

Yet, despite knowing that Atman is our ultimate reality, most of us have drifted far away from its true meaning. Ignorance has trapped this sacred word in such an illusion that it has become associated with ghosts, spirits, and witches.

It is truly unfortunate that the very civilization which gave the world invaluable concepts like “Atman” and “Paramatman,” and one of the highest philosophies, has today allowed its greatest spiritual truth to be mixed with superstition and entertainment.

When we look outside India, the word “Atman” is not generally used in such frightening or supernatural contexts. However, ignorant beliefs, films, and local folklore have turned Atman into something that flies around, enters people’s bodies, and frightens them.

This is why the very first thing many educated and rational people associate with religion and spirituality is mere superstition.

If we reduce Atman to nothing more than a “force that leaves the body” or a “ghost,” we ourselves move away from liberation and from our highest truth. We must break this illusion and understand the true meaning of Atman as revealed by the sages.

What Are Atman, Paramatman, and Jivatman?

The sages did not introduce the words “Atman,” “Paramatman,” and “Jivatman” for entertaining stories. They gave these terms to help human beings transcend the limitations of the mind and the body. But when these words fall into ignorant hands, their original meaning becomes completely distorted.

It is just like when an entertainment lover says, “I read a book,” and a sincere seeker of wisdom says, “I read a book.” The words are exactly the same, yet the experience, purpose, and outcome are entirely different. A person’s understanding of the world always reflects the person they are.

Is Atman Inside the Body, Outside It, or Beyond Both?

Atman is neither inside the body nor outside it. It is not something that can be found at a particular location within the physical universe. If Atman had a location or a boundary, it too would become part of this limited and impermanent world.

Atman is not an object of this world. This entire universe, this body, and all the senses are extensions of your mind. They are experiences created by the mind. The sages described Atman as “Achintya” (Inconceivable), meaning that it cannot be conceived or contained within the limits of the mind-created world.

Whatever image you create of Atman is merely a creation of your own mind, and everything produced by the mind is impermanent and ultimately unreal.

In truth, the purpose of speaking about Atman is to help you go beyond the mind, dissolve the ego, and become established in your highest reality.

Our mind creates an illusory world centered around the ego. This world is not ultimately real. That is why no one finds lasting bliss or peace here. There is only suffering, and all suffering arises from this ego.

The ego is the identity you have assigned to yourself: “I am this body,” “I am this name,” “I belong to this society,” “These are my thoughts.” This sense of “I-ness” is not the truth.

As long as you mistake yourself for this ego, the reality you perceive cannot be the truth. If the ego itself is false, how can the world created through it be true?

When an ego-centered person sees the world, they do not see it as it is. They see it through the lens of their own conditioning. Some things appear attractive, others unpleasant. Some create fear, while others create attachment.

In reality, however, only the play of nature is unfolding. Atman is that which remains when the ego is absent. Self-knowledge means the dissolution of this false sense of “I.”

What you currently take yourself to be is merely the ego, and that is not the truth. Through Self-knowledge, this false identity can be dissolved. What remains after the disappearance of the ego is Atman.

Can you know Atman through imagination? Can you attain Atman through your senses and physical body? No.

Everything you know as existence has been constructed by your mind. Within this structure, what have you accepted as truth? Your body and your ego.

So if you try to create Atman within this same mental framework, it too will be nothing more than another false imagination.

Just as every falsehood points toward a corresponding truth, the ego is false, and the truth is Atman.

And Atman cannot be found within this limited world created by falsehood.

Conclusion:

If you truly seek Self-knowledge, the first step is to abandon every imagination and superstition you hold about Atman. Atman is not a frightening entity that flies around or enters people’s bodies.

Atman is your own pure consciousness, your true nature.

When you break free from the bondage of the mind and the ego, when false identity dissolves and you enter that silent presence where only pure existence remains—that is Atman.

This journey is not about traveling to another world. It is about going within. It is about realizing your ego-free nature, which is the source of truth, spiritual liberation, peace, and bliss. Know Atman, and move forward on the path to liberation.
