Benefits of Chanting the Om Mantra and How to Chant It?

Do I Need to Chant Om?

If you study the scriptures, you will find that Om is referred to as Pranava, meaning the sound that represents the entire universe. It is not an ordinary word; rather, it is a sound that contains the essence of the whole existence. If one were to say that there is a single sound that signifies the universe and contains the knowledge of its true nature, then that sound is Om. No other word or sound can express this truth with such completeness.

You see, the sound of Om consists of three syllables—A, U, and M. These three syllables represent the beginning, the middle, and the end. The entire universe exists within these three principles; everything is born, remains for a period of time, and eventually comes to an end. Om encompasses this entire journey—from the origin of the universe to its expansion, and finally to its dissolution.

But the meaning of Om is not limited to this alone. A seeker who becomes absorbed in the chanting of Om is, in reality, rebelling against worldly illusion. This is a profound truth. When you immerse yourself in Om, you challenge the illusion that keeps you bound to the world, because Om is the path that leads beyond the world.

The true nature of every object and every being in the universe can be realized through Om, because this Pranava syllable is the purest expression of consciousness. Nothing is purer than this, for it is not limited to any object or thought; rather, it is the very fundamental nature of consciousness itself.

What is the true meaning of chanting Om? If you go deep enough, you will discover that Om is nothing less than a blessing in itself. Your entire life is contained within Om—your birth, your life, and your death are all encompassed within it. This means that everything you experience, whether birth, the journey of life, or death, arises from that one fundamental reality.

However, that knowledge which takes one beyond worldly illusions is what Om truly is. Maya is the expression of ignorance, which completely entangles a person in bondage. This illusion is so subtle that a person does not even realize when and how they become trapped in it. If you wish to understand in detail how Maya arises, we have discussed it extensively in another article.

What Spiritual Benefits Can I Gain from Chanting Om?

Spiritual Liberation: Until one realizes the true nature of the world that appears before the senses, liberation is impossible. This is because another name for liberation is realization—the realization of what the world is and who the worldly person is.

Om does not actually take you to some supernatural realm. Rather, it helps reveal the truth of this very universe exactly as it is.

The universe exists before even the ignorant person; it is visible to everyone. But can they truly see it as it really is? If you ask them, you will find that they know almost nothing about it. Instead, they will tell you countless superstitions. First of all, they will say, “I”meaning this body is an existence separate from the universe, whereas this is not the reality. There is a vast difference between this belief and the truth.

Spiritual Bliss: When the mind arises within consciousness, a person becomes incomplete, because another name for the mind is incompleteness, as it is associated with the body. Atman (conscious principle the Self)  under the influence of the mind and the senses, comes to believe, “I am this body, which is an object of experience; this is my true identity.” It is then that the world appears. This entire process begins with a mistake, where pure consciousness identifies itself with the body and the mind.

The Om mantra reveals that the foundation of everything material is the immaterial. When one becomes absorbed in meditation on Om, one realizes that Om itself is the source of all worldly experience. It is here that supreme bliss is attained, because nothing remains to be experienced anymore. One becomes a witness to Om, which means becoming a witness to the Whole. When witnessing becomes so profound that the distinction between the experiencer and the experience disappears, that state is called supreme bliss.

Inner Transformation: To overcome the afflictions, mental impurities, and tendencies within you, spiritual practice and self-observation are essential. If you understand how meditation and yoga are profoundly important in life, you will realize that they are not merely external practices but a means to inner well-being.

Om can be immensely helpful in turning your attention inward, because by becoming absorbed in its chanting, you are able to observe yourself with detachment. When you look at your thoughts and mental tendencies without attachment, they naturally begin to settle down.

Inner Purity: There is no simpler means to purify the mind than this, because Om is another name for pure consciousness itself. Om is that which is the supreme cause of the creation, sustenance, and dissolution of the entire universe.

To destroy the impurities within yourself, you may establish yourself in Om with the intention of becoming free from your flaws. Or you may approach it with the sincere curiosity to discover whether the impurities within you are truly the ultimate reality, or whether there is something beyond them. It is this very curiosity that pushes the seeker forward and gradually leads them toward that pure reality which exists beyond all impurity.

What Are the Mental Benefits of Chanting Om?

It helps in attaining mental peace, as it can assist in relieving stress and anxiety. When the mind repeatedly wanders and becomes entangled in worries, the chanting of Om provides an anchor upon which the mind can rest.

Om truly leads you toward supreme peace—that pure Self which is free from worldly forms. It also brings self-confidence and mental stability, because when the mind turns away from external disturbances and connects with inner stillness, it finds a solid foundation. This also inspires one to improve one’s life.

At the same time, it helps develop emotional balance, because yoga leads you toward profound equanimity. Equanimity means remaining undisturbed even in situations of pleasure and pain, gain and loss. If you wish to understand what “Samadhi” and “being established in Samadhi” mean in yoga, read this article, where we have discussed the subject in detail.
