What is Shiva Swarnamala Stuti “Ishagirisha Naresha”?
Like Lord Shiva’s “Namami Shamishan” Stuti, Shiva Swarnamala Stuti is a renowned Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva.
This hymn emphasizes that one should worship Lord Shiva because without complete surrender, a person cannot attain spiritual liberation from worldly suffering.
The stuti primarily describes the Saguna (manifest) form of Lord Shiva while also indicating His Nirguna (formless) nature as the Supreme Brahman. Naturally, the formless Absolute cannot be described in the same way as His manifest form.
However, the hymn explains the spiritual benefits attained by becoming absorbed in this formless aspect of Lord Shiva. For example, the verse Bhagavan Bharga Bhayāpaha Bhūta Pate Bhūtibhūṣitāṅga Vibho describes Him as the destroyer of sins and the remover of fear.
Each verse concludes with Sāmba Sadāśiva Śambho Śaṅkara Śaraṇaṁ Me Tava Caraṇayugam, meaning, “O Sadashiva, accompanied by Goddess Parvati! O Shambhu! O Shankara! I take refuge at Your divine pair of feet.” This repeated refrain inspires the devotee to walk the path of complete self-surrender.
Who is the Author of Shiva Swarnamala Stuti?
There is no universally accepted or historically authenticated evidence regarding the authorship of Shiva Swarnamala Stuti. Many sources attribute it to Adi Shankaracharya.
However, there is no clear historical or textual evidence to conclusively support this claim. Therefore, it is not appropriate to state with certainty who composed this hymn.
The stuti is found independently in numerous collections of hymns, worship manuals, and devotional compilations. It is widely recited today, but there is no universally accepted evidence identifying the original ancient scripture in which it first appeared. For this reason, it is generally regarded as an independent hymn in praise of Lord Shiva.
