Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Mantra
Mantra Lyrics: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namah
By chanting the “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” mantra dedicated to Lord Krishna, devotees bow down to Lord Krishna, offering their reverence and salutations.
Lord Krishna is the embodiment of the highest purity of consciousness, beyond the illusions of Maya. Krishna is also known as Vasudeva—*Vasu* refers to the individual soul (Jivatma), like you and me, while *Deva* means the One who is higher than the individual soul and transcends it. Therefore, Vasudeva is the name of Krishna’s Supreme Reality, which is awakened, free from worldly illusion, and beyond the limitations of the individual self.
In this article, we will explain the spiritual meaning of this sacred Vedic mantra, how this practice benefits you, and what it truly means to bow to Lord Krishna—that is, how this mantra should actually be chanted.
Meaning and Significance of the Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Mantra
Om: Om is known as *Pranava*, the sacred name of the Supreme Reality (Paramatma) and the primordial Vedic mantra. Om appears in the mantras of every deity, indicating that all divine forms are manifestations of the same Supreme Reality represented by Om. What is Paramatma or Atman (the Supreme Reality)?
Why Om is considered so special and what wisdom it conveys has been explained in detail in our other articles.
Namo: It means “I bow” or “I offer my reverence.” In common language, words like Namaste and Namaskar carry a much deeper meaning, which we have discussed extensively elsewhere. Like Om, this word also originates from the Vedas.
Bhagavate Vasudevaya: “To Lord Vasudeva”—in simple words, salutations to the Lord of all individual souls, the One whom every soul should worship.
Meaning: Repeated salutations to Lord Vasudeva, the embodiment of the Supreme Reality.
Why Do People Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”?
When you understand the meaning of this mantra and worship Vasudeva, your consciousness gradually becomes free from bodily identification and ego. This is known as spiritual liberation—the state of transcending both pleasure and pain and attaining supreme bliss.
In this mantra, Vasudeva refers to the One who is beyond you—that is, beyond the individual soul. Therefore, He is called the Supreme. You cannot attain Him through personal effort alone; rather, you must become available to Him through complete surrender. Only by becoming one with Krishna can Krishna truly be realized. Otherwise, no matter how much one mechanically repeats the mantra, ignorance does not transform into wisdom.
However, unless you understand the nature of your own bondage, you cannot truly invoke Krishna. One must clearly know who Krishna really is. We often say Krishna is God or the Supreme Being, but the deeper meaning behind these words must also be understood.
When chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, your attitude should be that you have embraced the path of knowledge—the knowledge of the mind. We have discussed this in another article explaining what self-observation is.
While chanting this mantra, devotees aspire to rise above the present condition of their consciousness. This requires recognizing one’s thoughts, tendencies, and worldly attachments—the ways in which the individual soul remains identified with the ego. This is why ordinary people naturally consider themselves to be the highest; that itself is their bondage, because this false self is created by identification with the body and its identity. Devotion is the practice of becoming free from this false self, and above this limited self stands Lord Vasudeva Krishna.
When one worships Krishna or chants Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, the vision turns inward. When attention is directed outward, there are merely words of language; when attention turns inward, there is the mantra of one’s Lord.
In another article, we explained that while chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya, devotees of Lord Shiva stand before His fierce Rudra form, gaining fearlessness, inner purity, and many other incomparable spiritual benefits.

What Are the Ultimate Benefits of Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya?
Jivanmukti (Liberation While Living): True liberation while living occurs when one becomes fully aware of the bondages of life, without the veil of ignorance. It does not mean that life comes to an end; rather, the entire meaning of life is transformed. Life continues, but there is no bondage to life or to the world. This state is also called Moksha, the transcendence beyond birth and death.
Realization of the Supreme Brahman Nature of God: God is not something separate or external. This realization also happens only within and is known as Divine Consciousness (Bhagavatta). In Yoga, this is regarded as the highest attainment, which is also described as Samadhi—the ultimate state of spiritual absorption.
Supreme Bliss: Spiritual Bliss is that bliss which is completely independent of the material world. It is the state beyond pleasure and pain born of attachment, where neither worldly happiness nor sorrow remains. Both disappear along with attachment, leaving only the eternal transcendental bliss.
